Discipleship
We talk a lot about discipleship here at Compass Point. It’s a major part of our mission. And it’s the embodiment of Christ’s teaching on the Great Commandment (loving God; loving people), and the Great Commission (making disciples). The spiritual life towards discipleship is a process. We see it in 4 steps that often overlap one another:
1. To help seekers become new disciples; then,
2. To coach these new disciples to grow to become established disciples;
3. To help established disciples become serving disciples, and finally,
4. To help serving disciples become reproducing/multiplying disciples.
Discipleship Relationships
A discipleship relationship is formed when two to twelve people engage in regular, face-to-face interactions, in which participants identify next steps in their walk with God, cheer each other on, invite accountability for their “next steps”, and pray for each other. We have some core "milestones" that we hope will be realized in every Compass Point disciple.
Milestones – We will:
- love God with our entire being, love our neighbour as we love ourselves, and have a passionate love for the work of Christ (Matthew 22:37-39; 28:19, 20).
- be able to articulate what God has done for us as his witness (Mark 5:19; Acts 3:5).
- be regular participants in community worship (Hebrews 10:24, 25; Acts 2:42).
- engage in a small group discipleship relationship (Matthew 28:19, 20; Acts 2:46).
- publically identify with Christ in baptism (Matthew 28:19, 20).
- establish habits that promote spiritual growth, life transformation and the development of Christian character, e.g. Bible reading, meditation, prayer, service, and giving.
- maintain a balanced lifestyle that promotes mental, physical, spiritual & social growth (Luke 2:52).
- engage in acts of service within the body of Christ and within the community that God has placed us (Mark 10:45; Ephesians 4:11, 12).
- pray for service and evangelistic opportunities and seize such opportunities as they arise (Colossians 4:2-4; Acts 1:8).
- engage in the intentional act of making disciples with a view to reproduction and multiplication (Matthew 28:19, 20).
One of the best environments for a discipleship relationship to take place is within a small group. Click here to find out what happens in a typical small group.
